Orissa bibliographic database Dear Members and Friends of the Orissa Project, one of the major tasks we had set us at the begin of the Project was the creation of a library data base containing materials relevant for the study of Orissa. This was planned to facilitate the search for printed material about Orissa, or from Orissa, and as a sequel to the printed Orissa Bibliography edited by H. Kulke and G.N. Dash et al. (Cuttack 1981), which contains entries prior to 1980. The programming and first phase of testing of the programme has been done, after some delay due to the untimely demise of one key member of the team, and some unsuspected cuts in fund and personnel. We wish to thank the team of Mr. Dirk Krämer (Computer Science, Kiel University) for making their programming skills and computing power available for this project. We also thank all of you who have contributed their data to our collection, esp. Prof. Mallebrein, Nanda and Tanabe who let us have their bibliographies at an early stage, the staff of the SWB (South-West German Library Network) and the staff of National Library, Calcutta, esp. the Director, Dr. Shyamalkanti Chakravarti, Mr. S.K. Nandi (Asst. Librarian, Oriya Div.), Mr. K.K. Kochukoshy (Librarian, General Editor National Bibliography) and Mr. Shaikh Mazaharul Islam. Without them we would not be were we are now. The present internet search engine is still a kind of beta version. We deliberately did not attempt to weed out all bibliographical errors at this stage. While we are fairly confident the software will run all right, it accesses a data base which comprises just a fraction of the bibliographical material collected over the last five years - so far between 3000 and 4000 data sets. When you search the data base, you will see that quite a lot of the oldest material occurs twice. This is, because we joined two partly redundant data bases. Doubles will be removed and things generally revised and augmented over the next months. In order to do this, we need your cooperation. If you find mistakes or important things missing, please communicate this to us. If books and papers written by you arent there, please let us know. Lasty, please feel free to communicate any other critique, suggestion and encouragement you have. The staff Nils Aulike (administrative coordinator) Short users manual for the new Orissa bibliographic database.
The new Orissa bibliographic database is a web-based search engine
URL: http://dynweb.rz.uni-kiel.de/~sughi063/literat/index.html,
which is very similar to other conventional internet search engines. Most of the search options speak in name and function for themselves. If, however, the usage of a search option is not clear just place your mouse cursor on the title of the option and after a second a pop-up window with a little help text will appear. But there are also some special functions that need further explanation. If you look left on the top of your Browser window, you can see three main categories of searches, General Search, Journals and Collection. Just click on the link to use one of them. The following keywords describe further functions for every category.
General Search
Search in: Select the type of literature you want to search for. Usually all types are selected.
Journals (Articles)
This category is useful, if you want to search for
journal articles exclusively. You wether can decide you want to search
in all journals or just in one particular. To do so select a journal
from the list beneath. show content of selected journal: The idea behind this is to enable the user, who he has found an interesting article in a particular journal to search in the same volume and issue of that journal for other articles. This option is usually not activated. After it is selected and the search is repeated the name of the journal will appear as a blue link. By clicking it other articles will be shown, if available.
Collections (Articles)
Same procedure as for the journal articles.
How to correct your data:
If you have found fault in your data, something you
want to be corrected, updated, or deleted proceed as follows.
URL: http://dynweb.rz.uni-kiel.de/~sughi063/literat/index_debug.html.
Before you start your search, please select Debug:
Yes at the bottom of the search option frame. After the search
process is completed, the identification code is visibly marked in red
at the beginning of each data set. Because you cant correct the
data yourself please send the identification code(s) to ulbrich@asian-history.uni-kiel.de
ulbrich@asian-history.uni-kiel.de along with your desired corrections.
Your bibliographical data will be corrected as soon as possible. |
